Picture this, you get done hosting a party at your house and are in the super ‘clean’ mode. You gather all the beverage cans and bottles and put them into a plastic bag to haul them to the store. You get to the store looking like Santa Claus with your huge ginormous bags – finally getting to the machine and there is a line for the glass bottles . You glance up – and even better the machine is beeping because the container is full. Fifteen minutes go by in which you eagerly await your turn. The teller comes and fixes the machine which allows you to place your bottles into the machine. The machine spits it out and says – “Store doesn’t accept this brand” or the barcode is not “legible”. You punch the machine a few times and then your slip comes out.
To be blunt – that pisses me off. What does one do? The deposit has been paid and the store doesn’t accept the bottle. Do you throw the bottle away or keep it and take it to another store? I mean at the end of a huge night you may still have at least $5 dollars in cans that are not accepted and it is a pain in the rear carrying that back back to your car.
At bare bone minimum you should get some money even from the store even if they don’t accept them…my rational is as follows:
- The deposit was paid to the state of Michigan where they are happy to collect free money
- Michigan took that money and hopes that you can’t claim your money back
- Why should business that sell the beverages take the cans back? The state of Michigan collects the tax then they should open up kiosks or a store where you can take the bottles back themselves.
