Last week my wife and I decided to take our kids up to the park; two rowdy younger boys need to let off some steam once in a while. So we cruised past Bennett’s field and it was packed due to a few baseball games so I suggested that we visit Hamburg Elementary school. I knew that Hamburg Elementary was closed around 2007 due to budget cuts and consolidation of the Pinckney Community School District but I knew the playground was somewhat open. We pulled in the parking lot and to my astonishment many forgotten memories came back: the fifth grade softball game that was canceled due to the 5th graders the previous year being poor sports, the lady that sent me to the wall almost every recess (i cant remember her name), the playground, the basketball court in the back, the soccer field where we ran the mile run, field days, a few of my teachers – Mrs. Tomlin, Mrs. Piesco, Mrs Emery, Mrs Olech (the principal)etc…but my heart sank because the school playground is overgrown with weeds and the school building seems to be dilapidated.
What I can glean that the school was built in 1901 as a two story frame school, it expanded in 1957 and again in the late 90’s it held at the most 300 students.
Part 2 coming soon…Outdoor Pictures
