I can’t hardly believe that 10 years have passed since the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. The first thing I remember of that day was that I was downstairs in the computer lab of Calvin College trying to access the New York Times. I know…I was young and naive at the time but I vividly remember that the page would not load up. I got pissed and went to ‘Johnnies’ (the local hangout) and saw the news on showing the twin towers. I saw smoke rising up from the WTC center building and I was like a deer in the headlights. I thought for a moment that it was footage of the previous bombing of the building and thought noting of it so I then proceeded to go to class. I went to my 8:00 am class and then went back to Johnnies for a snack in between classes. That is when there was a whole crowd of people standing around the tv watching the events unfold – I could not believe that the same footage was on tv again! I don’t remember if I actually saw the building fall but I was running late to children’s lit class. When I got there I told some of my friends that NYC was under attack and it was a huge terrorist bombing in NYC. The people did not believe me and the class went on till about 8:50
I went back to Johnnies and I then called my mom and my dad to see what they thought and we were all in shock. I actually thought I would be drafted and I actually would have fought for my country if it was needed. On my way home from school I went past the gas station and saw a huge line and I thought that I was lucky because I got gas the day before.
My roomates – Dave Balow, Travis Terpstra and Josh Slattery were all glued to the tv for the rest of the night…we wanted to know who did it, why they did it and when would we fight back.
