In elementary school we had a day called “Field Day.” This day came around the end of each year and one had to sign up early for the different events. The spots for each event filled rather quick so I would sign up as soon as possible. Honestly, the night before I couldn’t sleep because of the fun events that I knew would happen. I had a tradition for signing up for these four events: 1) 25 yard dash 2) softball throw 3) obstacle course 4) the tug of war
I would always get smoked in the 25 yard dash; I was never really fast. Come close to the farthest throw but my arm would hurt for a few days. Finish in the middle of the pack when competing in the obstacle course. But my all time favorite was the tug of war. You never knew what would transpire during these barbaric feats of strength. One time we had the largest kid in the entire school as our anchor – (we wrapped the rope around as tight as we could) and after a few pulls we were stuck at a stale mate. Both sides pulled as hard as possible and all of our veins were popping out of our necks. In what seemed like five minutes our rather large anchor let up a bit and everyone fell forward and the other team dragged all of us across the lawn! It was unbelievable…man I wish they had that again.
