Okay for Now is written by Gary D. Schmidt, who was an old professor of mine back in my Calvin College days. I believe that “Okay for now” will win the Newberry Award for Children Literature next year because it is so well written; I would say a masterpiece. The book’s protagonist faced many real life issues which riveted me to the soul such as: treatment of Vietnam Vets, deeper meanings of paintings, growth of a person against all odds, and an abusive parent. Honestly, I finished this book in less than 1 day – it was that good.
Three unique styles of this book stand out:
1) The way that the main character grows as a person against tremendous odds.
2) Schmidt’s carefully crafted use of words and artwork in this book.
3) All characters in the book are all well written and will inspire or move you at the core level.
