I was thinking today about the whole idea of liberty and freedom in the technology age. It stems from a recent book that I picked up as my Christmas gift: “Mindfire – Big Ideas for Curious Minds” First, there is a bill called Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and and here is a background from wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act)The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who requests the court orders, the actions could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators such as PayPal from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for 10 pieces of music or movies within six months. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.
Granted the government is supposed to step in and defend when another person intrudes on someone else’s rights. However, in a blatant attempt to protect a few individuals rights, many other rights could be infringed upon by the push of a button. Please don’t take my word for anything, but I am totally against the government infringing on First Amendment rights on the internet. I believe that if you give any inch to the government in censorship, the following generation will never know true freedom. So, I strongly feel that the internet should remain free and open and remain an intellectual enemy to anyone who tries to stop free flow of information .
